Train Rome to Florence- Need to buy in advance?

My daughter and I leave tomorrow for our trip to Italy. We fly into Rome and are taking the train immediately to Florence where we will be for 5 nights, then return to Rome for 3 nights before leaving to come home. I am hesitant to buy our train tickets ahead of time in case our flight is delayed. Is it neccessary to? Or can we just buy them there? And no we are not crazy. This is her college graduation trip which has been delayed twice. (She graduated December 2019) I am willing to assume the risk of Covid because I am tired of postponing our lives. We are vaccinated and boosted and have a huge pack of KN95 masks!

I don't think you would have a problem getting tickets - there are plenty of trains, plenty of seats. What you won't get is any discount for buying early. So, maybe this is one less thing you have to think about. Enjoy your trip Congrats to your daughter!

I would consider at least booking your return train tickets now as you could save a good 10-20 Euros per ticket. But the availability is enough that it wouldn't be a problem to buy day of tickets when you arrive in Rome.

The reason to buy train tickets ahead of time is to save money. Since you are traveling tomorrow, that option is already no longer open to you. If you buy your tickets now, you would lock yourselves in to the specific train without saving any money.

So at this point you should just wait and buy the tickets when you get in day after tomorrow. There are a million ticket machines in the station.

If you are flying into FCO, the direct train to Firenze SM Novella departs from the airport station at 13:53.
I'd get the return ticket in advance, comparing Trenitalia's schedules and fares with Italotreno's.

Get the Trenitalia app, tickets from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Firenze SM Novella after retrieving your luggage. You will change trains downtown, referring to the train number to find the platform [binario] number on the departure board/monitors, as Florence is an intermediate stop.
