Train reservations with an Italy Pass

Hi,

My husband and I will be traveling to Italy in September. We purchased a 1st class Italy train pass (that option seemed to be the best for us). I know that we will need to buy train "reservations". Should we buy them here (through Rail Europe) or wait until we get there? (I've heard the lines came be pretty long in Italy) How would I found out how much just the train reservation would be over there? (like from Rome to Florence or Venice to Milan). Can we used the automated machines at the train stations to buy just the ticket reservations? Has anyone used a travel agency over there to make reservations(as mentioned in Rick Steves' book)?

Thanks!
