Train reservations with a Rail Pass

We are first timers spending a month in Italy, beginning 9/25 with a 2nd Class Rail Pass. (Yes I know it is sometimes cheaper buying individual tickets, but it is a long story). We have 3 long trips where I want to use the fast trains - Venice to Firenze, Firenze to Naples, & Naples to Rome. Can we make reservations now for the fast trains and use the Pass when we board? Any other helpful hints? Thank you. Doug

I believe you can make reservations via Rail Europe. But no reason to do so since you can easily make the reservations at the station prior to departure. There is no place on trenitalia to make reservations only. You must have the reservation before boarding since that will specify train, car, and seat number.

Thanks Frank. I assume that as long as I have a reservation I can go on fast train.

Sure, but you have to have a reservation for all trains except the Regional. That you can just get on and go. Be sure you have correctly validated your pass.

If you have a reservation on a fast train you can go on the fast train that you have a reservation for, in the seat that you have the reservation for. What you cannot do is have a reservation for one specific seat and train and get on another. The only trains in Italy that you can get on with your pass without a definate reservation are Regionale trains.
