Train Reservations Rome to Florence Saturday Sept. 23

How important is it to make a train reservation for five people Rome to Florence? Do I really need to do it at this time of year?

Probably not necessary
But if you know your date of travel you may still be able to get some discounted price if you purchase in advance-for 5 people that adds up

Otherwise you’ll pay the base rate on day of

Take at look at Trenitalia site to see what’s available now.
There are multiple trains to Florence every day so likely not going to sell out

My follow up question would be how important is it for you all to sit together? I have no doubt you can get train tickets. What I am unsure of is if you will all find seats together.

The main issues are already addressed above:

It depends
- how much you care about paying a little more for your tickets by waiting to purchase (but you're already quite close to the date, so I don’t know how much savings you're talking about anyway)
- How much you care about all five of you sitting together.

First on high speed trains there are only reserved seats, so you are asking how important is to get tickets in advance. Even in summer You never "need", but it's cheaper.

Check on Italotreno.it and Trenitalia.com the Rome-Florence trains running within the next 12 or 24 hours. Can you find a single sold out train? I couldn't. On the other hand, there are a few trains where the cheapest Standard class is sold out.

The problem is not finding a ticket at the last minute or sitting together, but being forced to pay the extortionate walk-up fare of € 55 per person whereas a discounted ticket costs "only" € 35.9.

Italotreno is usually cheaper than Trenitalia, but they run less trains.
