Train Reservations - how soon in advance?

We are flying into Rome & arrive around 4:30pm on Thursday 9/1/11. Should we make an advance reservation to get to Florence that evening? Will the trains be booked? also - we have a Eurail pass, so if we make a reservation & for some reason can't use it, does that count against our Eurail "day"?
Thanks!

There is something like 53 trains a day between Florence and Rome. I am sure you will find a seat. Make the reservation at the ticket window at the airport. That way you can walk off the Leonard Express and right to the train. Will not have to worry about missing the train.

Be prepared to use the self service kiosks. Lines may be long at the ticket window. Keep a close eye on your personal belongings while making your transaction at the kiosk.

Can I use our Eurail pass on the Leonardo Train? and it sounds like we would be able to make the reservation for the train from Roma Termini to Florence at the airport train station?
Thanks!

The answer to both of your last questions is a qualified "Yes". All seats on the Leonardo Express are 1st class so you'll need a 1st class pass. The platforms for the Leonardo Express and the trains to Florence are a long ways apart. Allow at least 30 minutes to make the connection at Termini. If you have a 2nd class pass, you could use it on a regional train to Tiburtina and take the metro from there to Termini.
