train reservations from genoa to cinque terre to venice to rome

Is there an easy way to book this train travel. I tried going to an online train schedule but it kept telling me it did not recognize Genoa or Cinque Terre as a destination. Would appreciate any info from other travelers. Thank you

Hi Carole. You need to enter a specific town in the Cinque Terre, i.e., Vernazza, on the Trenitalia site. Book one journey at a time: Genoa to Vernazza, for example, then Vernazza to Venice, and finally Venice to Rome.

No need to book a train to/from Cinque Terre in advance, these are regional trains and they don't sell out. You can't buy them more than a week in advance anyway. From Cinque Terre to Venice, you might want to only book the Florence->Venice or Bologna->Venice (depending on your routing through Parma or Pisa) portion of the train trip in advance and get a mini fare. Definitely book Venice to Rome in advance if you can snag a mini fare and save up to 60%.

Kevan: do you know how long the train ride from Venice to Rome is; ie hrs. After looking at a map, I am wondering if we should fly instead, as we will only be in Rome 2 days before flying back to NY. We have been to Rome twice before, so we will not be trying to make an extensive tour of the city. Thanks

Carole, As the others have mentioned, these are all easy trips and I wouldn't bother buying any of the tickets online. > Genoa to the C.T. (you'll have to specify one of the villages as your destination). For example, travel from Genova Piazza Principe to Monterosso is as short as 1H:15M via Regionale. > C.T. to Venice - Using La Spezia as your departure station, the trip is as short as 4H:27M, usually with two changes. > Venice to Rome - the trip is 3H:48M via EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita. I WOULD NOT fly on that route as it will take longer (when all is considered) AND you'll miss some great scenery! On those routes where you'll need reserved seats (ie: Venice-Rome), you can purchase your tickets a few days before you'll be travelling, either at a staffed ticket office or from the automated Kiosks (a credit card will be required). Purchase in advance may allow you to qualify for the "Mini" fares which are considerably cheaper. If you haven't travelled by train in Europe before, you may want to have a look at the "Rail Skills" chapter in Europe Through The Back Door", so that you're familiar with the "procedures" for changing trains, etc. BTW, which "online train schedule" were you using??? Cheers!

3:45 on the fast train, more on the slow train.
