We are trying to get train tickets in June from Florence to Spello but can't make reservations yet. Is this normal?
It is if trying to book after about June 10. That is the target date for changing to summer schedule. The new schedules will be slowly up dated over the next few weeks. Since most of that route are Regional. (Also the last to be up dated). I would buy when you get there. No advantage to buying on line or early since no discounts are given on Regional trains.
Thank you so much for the speedy reply. This information really helps. I was worried that maybe all the reservations were full already!
Buy the tickets at the station when you go. Don’t forget to validate (date-stamp) the tickets before boarding using the machines pictured below:

An important point about regional trains: they can't sell out, either (no reserved seats), so although they can get crowded, you don't have to worry about buying them early - and as has been pointed out, the price is the same 15 minutes before departure as it is two months ahead. More important to get to the station early in Florence and snag good seats in case the train really does get packed.
buck,
There are a few high speed trains on that route, but most are Regionale or Regionale Veloce. Travel time is about 3 hours. Some trains have one change (ie: Arezzo) and a few are direct (I'd suggest using a direct train if possible).
With the Regionale trains, no reservations are possible and the price is the same whether you buy in advance or on-the-spot. As mentioned in an earlier reply, if you buy locally, be sure to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or you'll risk hefty fines!
