train reservations

Not knowing the exact time we will arrive in Roma terminal after collecting bags at the airport and getting to Roma, will we be able to make a reservation for 1st class paasage on the spot for the train to Napoli?

Hi Chris. For train travel in Italy, the Eurail pass is almost always more expensive and more hassle than just buying individual tickets. As per your other question, yes, you can buy a ticket on the spot. Second class rarely sells out; first class almost never.

FWIW, second class trains in Italy are pretty nice and you can save a good bit of money by choosing them. More info here on Ron In Rome's extremely comprehensive website.

You will be able to make a reservation when you get to the termini station or even at the airport if you wish. If the next train to Naples is sold out (rarely happens) you can always get on the next one. There are many trains a day between the two cities. I wouldn't bother with first class seats on such a short trip. There is not enough of a difference in seats and coaches to justify the price. Donna

a friend who visited Italy 10 yrs ago said to book first class because the second class trains are filled with smoke. No one responding to queries about trains ever mentions this now,, so maybe it is no longer an issue. Maybe trains are non-smoking? I am going to Italy soon and also trying to decide where and when to book between cities.

Julie,
When are you going to Italy? I am going October 1- 10. My boyfriend insisted that we go in 1st class between VEnice, Florence, Rome and Naples. If you are going sometime after my return, I will be happy to give you my opinion and experience in 1st class. The price was actually not bad because we booked our trains on the mini-fare discount, so our 1st class fare was the same as the 2nd class fare. The only downside is that we are committed to those trains/times and cannot change them without a penalty and if we miss the train, then we are out of luck. Marianne

There is no smoking on the train. A lot of things have changed in 10 years and this and the pinching of backsides are just a few of them. It's a waste of money to purchase first class tickets on such short trips. There is not enough of a difference in coaches to justify the cost so save your money and use it for gelato or souveniers.
