I have reserved the fast train from Florence to Rome, but have only 20 minutes for transfer to the Rome-Civitavecchia fast train. Can anyone tell me whether, in the event there is a delay in the 1st leg of the trip (i.e., the company's "fault") will the conductor for the 2nd leg accept my ticket for a later train? Cheers.

If it is the company's fault (first train late), you can take a later train. If possible show your ticket to the train staff on the first train, and they can endorse it.
If it is your fault (you wasted time buying a gelato), hard luck, you cannot take a later train.

If both trains are run by the same company and it's their fault, you can:
- freely board the next Regionale train making the same route, if you missed a Regionale train
or
- get a new ticket for free at the counter for the next fast/high speed train making the same route, if you missed a fast/high speed train
You are always protected, even if you purchased the cheapest discounted tickets online. What you can do depends on the type of train you missed. If you missed a fast train with reserved seats you can't simply get on the next one.
20 minutes are 5 minutes more than the minimum connection time at Roma Termini, all the tracks are in the same area and at the same level.
