We have 1st class rail passes for Italy and I understand that we may need reservations. Do we need them?

Yes, you will need and pay for a seat reservation on all trains in Italy except for the Regionale trains. Those train are a lot like a big bus, just get on and go. This is one of the reasons that it is difficult to make a train pass pay in Italy.

Yes, 10Euro for each fast train that you will be on. 3Euro for the Intercity trains. No extra cost for the Regionale trains.
