Train questions

I'm trying to decide if it would be worth 90$ to have a personal tour guide pick us up at the Naples airport and drive us to sorrento, or should I just save some money by taking the local train? I know it would eliminate the worry of pickpockets or hauling our luggage from the airports to each train stations? I'm not sure how much the express train from Naples to sorrento? Thanks

From the airport, you'd have to get to central Naples for the train, runs about every half hour and takes 1-1.25 hours to Sorrento. There is NO express train, only the Circumvesuviana which is really a tram (w/o AC). The ticket price is about €4. In tourist season, there are several additional trains that are for tourists - the price is 2-3 times more, so it discourages locals from using it. The bus stops next to the train station in Sorrento. From there you still have to get to your hotel. Several years ago, I took a taxi from the station to my centrally located hotel on a side street, cost €15.

After all that, the bus sounds like a better option than the Circumvesuviana, even if you have to wait an hour or more for the next one. It is also cheap. Whether you need a taxi in Sorrento depends on where you're staying. The town center is downhill from the station, so if you're staying there, it should be walkable with wheeled bags.

Last week, we had a driver pick us up at Naples Centrale to take us to Sorrento at a cost of 95 Euro because we didn't want to take our bags on the Circumvesuviana. In hindsight that was a debatable decision. For the most part, the CV is fine. But on the way from Sorrento to Naples airport, we took the Curreri bus http://www.curreriviaggi.it/ for 10 Euro. I would reserve ahead, regardless of time of year. Maybe have your hotel call and do this for you, as their website is tough to maneuver.

The trip takes about 90 minutes, and ours took us through the rarely-seen top side of the coast, through Meta, Piano di Sorrento, Vico Equense (that's where I want to stay next time!), and Castellammare di Stabia (horrendous traffic).
