Train question - Venice to Positano?

Great helpline and tips! Thanks!
May 15th traveling from Venice to (eventually) Positano, but I guess the train stops at Sorrento, so I take a bus the rest of the way. How many hours will this trip take? Any suggestions? Larry, I copied all your previous tips! Thanks!

A lot of hours... ;)

They go in twos - two hours from Venice to Florence. Two from Florence to Rome. Two from Rome to Naples. Two from Naples to Sorrento and waiting to catch the bus to Positano. And then, one. The most exciting one hour bus ride you've ever taken along the Amalfi Coast. Oh, and then a bit of walk to your hotel in Positano.

Thank you! So there isn't a "direct" train" from Venice to Sorrento? I have to stop at each city? Stay on the train? or transfer? sleep?
Sorry for the simple quesitons...sounds like an all day affair, maybe all night?

The fast Eurostar trains will take you from Venice all the way to Rome Termini where you will have to change to another EuroStar train all the way to Naples (about 6.5 hours total). Then in Naples train station you will change trains to the local commuter train Circumvesuviana which will dead-end in Sorrento. From Sorrento you have to catch a bus to Positano.

There are other non-EuroStar trains from Venice to Naples but they are a bit slower.

Barbara, there are one or two runs a day out of Venice to Naples with no train changes. It does stop at Bologna, Florence and Rome but no train changes. The first one I see leaves Venice at 10:43am and the trip takes 6hrs.10min. CLICK HERE to see the schedule.

At Naples, you will have to change to the private Circumvesuviana train for the 1:10hr. trip to Sorrento. At the Sorrento train station, you catch the SITA bus to Positano. Your looking at about 8.5hrs-9.0hrs. to make this journey.

Barbara,
We are going to be taking the overnight train and reserving a couchette from Venice to Naples ( then we'll be catching the circumvesuvia train from Naples to Sorrento). At first I had looked at a flight, but then it seemed to be getting expensive and the times didn't work. I figured we'd save some money on the cost of transportation and avoid an extra night at a hotel in Venice by taking the overnighter train. There's only one direct train leaving at 12:04 am and then arriving in Naples at 10am. Long trip- but with a few glasses of red wine, I'll be sleeping like a baby!
