I see on these threads that one must validate the train tickets where seats aren’t reserved? But if they are bought electronically online - how do you validate at train station? Do they need to be
Printed off in advance ? Sorry this seems like a silly question.. but an important little detail to know... Grazie...
It's not a silly question at all. When I was in Italy, I asked this very question to this forum. This was the answer I got:
You do not need to validate e-tickets. They already have a time and date on them.
Another general rule is that a ticket printed out on ordinary paper (as you would do at home) need not be validated. It will not fit in the machine. When you see the machines, the size limitation will be clear.
The purpose of validating is to stop you using the ticket twice.
- Ticket with reserved seats can only be used on that train, no way can you use them twice, so no validation
- Tickets bought on the internet have a time and a date on them, that stops you using them twice. (If they didn't have a time and date on them, validation would not solve the problem as you could print out as many copies as you wanted).
- Local tickets bought at a station (ticket machine or manned ticket office) are "open", you can use them on any train, so you MUST stamp them before you board the train to stop multiple use.
Thank you all for clearing this up for me !
