Hi, I apologize if the answer to this is obvious, but I was wondering if I bought a train ticket to a certain destination, can I get off at one of the stops for a few hours then use the same ticket and board the train to my final destination? Or should I buy the ticket to where I would like to get off for a few hours, then buy another ticket to my final destination.
Example: Bolzano to Venice via Verona. I would like to get off at Verona for a bit, then board and train to Venice.
You have to use the start/stop for each ticket you purchase. The only exception may be a Regionale, but I will let Dario or Roberto confirm that case.
(You will switch trains in Verona to go from Bolzano to Venice, so that is two separate tickets, anyway. Just pick a later start time when purchasing the ticket from Verona to end in Venice.)
The only ticket that somewhat allows a stop and go is the Regionale train ticket. That ticket is good for any R train between point A and E within the time limit for that ticket. I think the time limit is four hours -- but could be six. As long as you complete your travels in the time period you are good. That works for R trains because there are no seat reservation. If you cannot find a seat you stand till one is available. On ALL other trains in Italy a seat reservation is required so the ticket is specific to a date, time, and train.
For your situation, I would purchase two Regionale tickets -- Bolzano to Verona, and Verona to Venice. Regional tickets are cheap and depending how purchased may have to be time stamped prior to boarding. That is an expensive fine if you don't do it.
To echo the above : buy separate regionale tickets
Venice to Verona
Verona to Bolzano
I'd get the first leg ticket on-line. Then I would buy the Verona-Venice ticket at the counter in Bolzano before departing. I have the impression that Bolzano station is less hectic than Verona. You'll have to time-stamp the second ticket before gettin' on the train to Venice, otherwise you'll be fined and asked to pay in the spot.
There is a manned luggage deposit inside Verona PN station: https://www.kibag.it/en/deposito-bagagli-verona/deposito-kipoint-verona-pn/
