Trying to avoid Naples getting from Siena to Amalfi. Perhaps as far as Rome and then a private car? Suggestions welcome - thanks in advance with approx. prices if possible.
take a train from rome to naples. from naples train station take taxi to the ferry dock and get to sorrento or amalfi by boat. naples is not that scary it's not worth the money to get private car.
To hire a private driver is going to be expensive. I don't have an exact figure but it's a long drive. You can take the train from Siena to Chiuse, Rome, Salerno and then onto Amalfi without stopping in Naples. There are a couple of these routes a day. It costs 46.30 per person and takes just over 6.5 hours. If your main concern is not going through Naples this might be the way to go. donna
A private driver from Rome to Amalfi is probably going to cost you around 400-450 euros. We did it a couple years ago - there were 4 of us so we were able to split the cost. Price then was in the high 300's. Remember it is about a 4-hour drive. Our driver was a friendly talkative guy who taught us a lot about that region of Italy as we drove. It was great being met at the Rome airport and driven right to the door of our Sorrento hotel. We had a lot of fun along the way but Donna is right - it ain't cheap.
Cindi, When will you be in Italy? From spring until fall there is daily direct bus service from Rome to Sorrento.
Thanks for your suggestions. Our trip is mid Sept, 2011.
I would train from Rome to Salerno, then walk to the dock and take a ferry to Amalfi - at least that is what I am planning on doing when I am there in 2012! :-)
EKC is absolutely correct! Take the train to Salerno and then the ferry (or bus) to Amalfi. I did this two years ago, only I rented a car instead. Salerno train station is a breeze, and you won't have to go through the stink hole of Naples. I am going back there again in 2011. A private car is cost prohibitive, especially long distance. A private day-long tour by car of the Amalfi area alone would be about 450-600 Euro.
