Train pass to Venice & Abruzzo?

My husband and I will be flying into Rome in about a week and will need to get to Venice to get our cruise ship. The cruise ends in Citavecchio, near Rome. From there we plan to go to his hometown near Sulmona in Abruzzo, where his uncle will pick us up from either the train or bus station. Finally we will return to Rome for our flight back to the U.S. Can anyone recommend the best way to accomplish this? We are not sure whether to buy a 3-day
Eurail Saverpass to cover the one-way to Venice and round trip to/from Sulmona, or if we should just buy individual train tickets to Venice and then take a bus to/from Sulmona. Also, if we do buy a train pass, will the Saverpass allow non-consecutive travel days, and must we make advance reservations on the train to Venice?

Hi Mary. In Italy, individual tickets almost always work better than a pass. Go to trenitalia.com (le frecce option at top of page) to see train times and prices from Rome to Venice. Buy online if willing to lock in to a time, or just wait and buy when you get there. Enjoy your trip!

You should do the math to see if a rail pass will save you any money. When checking the trenitalia site you'll need to input a date within the week for connections between Civitavecchia and Sulmona and Sulmona to Rome as these will be on regional trains and they won't show the prices more than a week out. You won't be able to buy those tickets online more than a week in advance but they are on regional trains which don't sell out. As for the train trip to Venice, since you are going there on your first day I would wait to buy the tickets once you get to Italy. If you purchase tickets and your plane is late you'll have to spend extra time changing your tickets. I would just buy them when you get there. Same thing for the other legs. Just buy them at the station on the day of travel. There is no need to pay a reseller a fee when you can buy the same tickets for less and won't have to pay a seat reservation fee. Donna
