train pass for Italy

If I bought a 4-day train pass in advance for Italy, are there options to reserve my seat a few days prior to trip or is it just walk-on at the time? Also, is there potential to "buy-up" to a business class seat if I purchase standard seating?

Usual advice is NOT to buy train passes for Italy, because you MUST book seats (for a cost, €10 IIRC) for any intercity or high-speed train.
And:
- long distance train fares booked in advance are low.
- regional train fares are very low

Agreed - train passes are not recommended. Depending on length of the journey, upgrading to business class doesn't really add value.
