Train or Drive from Nice to Vernazza?

How long is the train ride? How long is the drive? Is it worth staying in Lerici or Vernazza? Thanks for your responses.

Patty - I've taken the drive several times - It is SPLENDID!!! Nothing wrong with the train except the car allows you to make frequent stops at Fantastic Photo Op locations and also to have lunch, shop, etc.
Vernazza is one of my Favorite spots anywhere and I always recommend staying right on the harbor at
http://www.nerinarooms.it/ A very scenic location next to Al Castello and right on the Harbor.
And to those who would tell you that the parking is difficult - not really - about 12 euros per night and a third of a mile walk to the village. Or , you can drive down to La Spezia - park the car in one of many places and train it up to Vernazza in about 15 minutes on the local. I guess, if you were worrying about the hastle of parking you might not take a car into a lot of places in Italy BUT - It's worth it!! Whether it's the hilltowns, Le Cinque Terre, Verona, etc. you will be able to park and it will be worth every second of it. Contrary to what Doug from Portland seems to think!!

Either way - Enjoy your Trip !!!

Ciao, Greg

Patty - The only problem with following Greg's advice is that parking in Vernazza is very difficult. Kind of an important detail for Greg to neglect, but there is plenty of discussion on this board on that subject. So take that into account. If you're just going from Nice to Vernazza, I would take the train to avoid the hassle of parking your car.
