Train or Car? Levanto to Venice?

Hello there!
Traveling with my husband and two boys - you have all helped so much so far. Grazie Mille! Question 1: we leave Rome on a Sunday heading to an agriturismo near Seina. Should we take the train from Rome to Florence, rent a car and drive or train to Seina and rent the car, or rent in Rome and drive to Seina? So many options! After the four days we are in Florence for 3 days without car. Question 2: After Florence we go to Levanto/Cinque Terra for three days then Venice. From Levanto to Venice seems we return through Florence to catch the high speed train to Venice? Grazie Mille! Getting so excited even though we don't leave until June!!

Julie, for your journey to Siena, you have a third choice. Take the train from Rome to Siena. One train change in Chiusi. This is much less expensive than taking the fast train to Florence first. In Siena, you can rent a car from Hertz 2-3 blocks away or, if your agriturismo is in or near Siena, simply take a taxi. My wife and daughter did this about 10 days ago. Taxi fare was 12Euro. They then took a taxi to and from Siena for the first day for even less money. They saved 1.5 days on the rental car and for any costs to park the car in Siena. From Levanto, most runs will take you to Florence with 2-3 train changes. There are a few runs that go from Levanto direct to Milan where you change to a high-speed to Venice. I would rent in Rome since you are going to rent a car anyway. The train ride from Rome to Florence for 4 people is 180 euro (base price). Gas and tolls won't be more than 40 or 50 euro. It's less than 3 hours to drive from Rome to the Siena area.
