I am wondering about the best option for transportation from Rome to Siena. Do you have to travel through Florence if you go by train? Is it better to take a direct bus from Rome to Siena or take the train and change trains in Florence? How comfortable is the bus ride vs the train?
Thanks for any suggestions

But, yes, the FlixBus to and from Siena was very comfortable.
Thanks so much! That is exactly the information I was looking for
You are welcome!
Here's also part of a "private message" answer I gave someone who asked more about the FlixBus:
We bought the FlixBus ticket in advance using the FlixBus app. You'd have to consider whether this is a good idea if you are wanting to get the bus to Siena the same day you arrive in Rome.
It's a little hard to tell you how to get to the bus station from the Tiburtina metro station because the Tiburtina station has more than one exit and I don't know which one we used. I just now looked at a Google map of the area and it was NOT totally helpful. I searched on Roma Tiburtina, FlixBus, and Tiburtina bus station --- you can see these places on the map, yes, but the area is a tangle of streets. However, do not be discouraged. Leave plenty of time even though the two places are no more than two blocks apart. Keep asking people where to go and you'll get there. The exit we came out of was below the street level, we walked up some stairs and walked around to the left, crossed a street, and caught sight of the buses. I don't recall seeing any helpful signs pointing the way!
Good to know! We are planning to spend 5 days in Rome before heading to Siena. I think I will make some time to familiarize myself with the bus location ahead of time.
