I am trying to find out train and/or bus options to get from Lucca to Monterosso in the Cinque Terre - mid week travel. Preference is train travel with minimal stops or changes What train companies do this route? Would you recommend buying these tickets in advance if travelling in the month of April (2018).

Frequent Trenitalia Regionale service with likely connections in Viareggio and/or La Spezia. The price is always the same and you can buy at the station, either from a ticket window or a ticket kiosk. Just remember to validate your ticket in the stamping machine on the platform. No. The trains you will be taking will highly likely be regionales - with no seat reservations - so they're inexpensive and easily purchased the day of your journey. As Sam said, your connections will most likely be Viareggio and/or La Spezia, and Pisa is a good possibility as well.

Some train options from Lucca to Monterosso include a segment on an Intercity or Freccia train. Only if you anticipate taking one of those should you consider buying discounted tickets in advance, and then only if you're comfortable committing to a specific travel date and departure time. Keep in mind that discounted tickets come with restrictions - no refunds and also no changes for Super Economy. You should have no problem buying tickets for whichever trains you want in April, and the sole purpose of buying in advance would be to obtain a discount on the more expensive Intercity or Freccia segment.
