Train or Bus from Siena to Rome

As I have taken the advice from many posters for our upcoming trip to Italy, I have not bought our train tickets tickets to Rome from Siena. How should I do this? we are staying in Gaiole in Chianti. I assume I will be leaving out of Siena.

Thanks,
David

Let me also say we are considering a bus as a transportation alternative as well.

Hi David,

How were you planning to get to Siena? You can check the schedule at trenitalia.com, but if I remember correctly, the majority of Siena - Rome trains go through Florence (with a few going through Chiusi maybe?) Anyway, depending on your mode of transportation, you may want to go back up to Florence and go directly, or go further south for a cheaper ticket. We were in Tuscany recently with a car. We returned it to Orvieto and were aboard an inexpensive one hour train to Rome within 10 minutes of leaving the rental facility.

We took the train from Siena to Rome and we went thru Chiusi. Our Rome hotel was near Termini station so that worked out well for us. About a 3hr. train ride.

A couple of differences between the bus and the train. First, either is just fine. The SENA bus departs from near the Siena city wall and it goes to the Rome Tiburtina train station and not Rome Termini. Rome Tiburtina is 4 underground metro stops away from Rome Termini. Next, the Siena train station is almost a mile from the city wall but does go to the Rome Termini train station.

We find the bus, a three hour ride, easier and more relaxing for this particular journey. Also cheaper...and direct.

David - the bus is the way to go. 3 scenic hours to Rome. Here's the website for Sena Bus, which will drop you off at Tiburtina Station: http://www.sena.it/
