Train or bus from Salerno to Pompeii?

I understand that the train from Salerno to Pompeii leaves view 15 to 20 minutes away from the site. As the site is very large we don't want to add the extra time walking there. Are there taxis from the train station to Pompeii or better yet are there buses that take you directly to the site?
Thanks

Depends on the time of year. A year ago March we took the train from Salerno station to the Pompeii town station (it does not go to the Pompeii Scavi station), about 50 minutes. We looked for a taxi, didn't see one so we started walking. It being a nice day--about 60 degrees--it was a very pleasant walk, past the city hall with the very cool 9/11 monument, a couple of beams from the actual Twin Towers. After about a half-hour (maybe 3/4 mile?) we reached the southern entrance to the ruins, Porta Navona. Got in and spent the next 4 hours wandering and having a nice picnic lunch (bring a couple panini and a few bottles of water) and a great time listening to the RS Pompeii podcast in real time.

At the end of the day we were near the main entrance, near the Pompeii Scavi station, but we couldn't easily take that back to Salerno, so we--with some effort--found a taxi to drive us back to the Pompeii town station. Thought the price was a little excessive at 15 Euro, but I wasn't about to argue. And we took the return train back to Salerno. I think the round trip cost us 6 Euro apiece.

I think if you decide to do it our way, it being September instead of March you should have more access to taxis.
