train or bus from Rome to Sorrento - Help!

Hi, We will be in Rome soon & I have to make plans to travel to Sorrento for 4 people plus luggage. Should I take the express train to Naples & then onto Sorrento or should I take the bus directly to Sorrento. I saw somewhere about that bus, but can't find the info now. Does anyone know if it is a direct bus, is it air-cond? & how long would the bus take. Thank you all.

A bus!!!!! Yikes!!!

Train from Rome to Naples and then take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. Takes about an hour from Naples. By far the best way to go.

Chris - Another thought for your consideration - Take the train down to Napoli - Then jump on the Hydrofoil and enjoy a really nice 40 minute trip to Sorrento!
Also, when you guys are in Sorrento please consider taking the Sita bus from the main square to Positano - A very cool ride - only takes about 25 minutes but I think you might just love it. You may get all kinds of advise from folks that have been there once or twice but the Hydrofoil from Naples is excellent and the Sita bus leaves from the main square, presumably after you've explored the old town section with it's many shops and cafes. You wouldn't go up to the bus station from the heart of town when the bus picks you up right in the main square. As to the poster's "nightmare" going from Naples to Sorrento - It's good to remember this is a TRAVELERS HELPLINE - Not a place to be negative!!!! She did say it was her first trip and that explains a lot - Personally , I've taken the hydrofoil about 75 times - Never had problem one !!!!

Ciao, Greg

thanks, the hydrafoil is a great idea, what a great introduction to the coast. Do you know if the hydrafoil or ferries will be running at the end of September & is it very expensive? Thanks for your help.

We did the train to Naples then the hydrofoil to Sorrento our first trip to Sorrento and it was a nightmare. I recommend the Circumvesuviana from the Naples train station, it's much easier. You will have lots of oppotunities to take wonderful boat trips once you're in Sorrento. The SITA bus to Positano actually leaves from the Circumvesuviana station in Sorrento...no need to walk to the main square to get it.

Susan is absolutely right on point: connecting between Napoli Centrale (incoming trains from the North) and Napoli Circumvesuviana rail is very easy: you take the escalators to the lower levels (underground) to catch your commuter train. Circumvesuviana trains to Sorrento leave every 30 minutes, and the fare is a mere 3.30 Euros (UNICO CAMPANIA Fascia 5 U5 Ticket, valid to Sorrento and indeed all the way to Positano via the SITA bus connection). Travel time to Sorrento is 64 minutes.

If you take the hydrofoil to Sorrento, you have to take an expensive taxi from Napoli Centrale to Molo Beverello, then you arrive at the Sorrento dock which is inconveniently located compared to the Circumvesuviana rail station (with SITA bus connections to Positano/Praiano/Amalfi).

Once in Sorrento, you'll be taking a hydrofoil to get to Capri, plus you have the possibility of taking a hydrofoil to Positano or Amalfi.
