Train options from Naples to Salerno

I have a trip coming up where I'll be flying into Naples and then taking a high speed train to Salerno. I plan to buy my train ticket as soon as it goes on sale on the Trenitalia website (or Italo). Here's my problem, though. I'll first be flying into Munich where I have just under a 2 hour layover. I know I'll have a tight squeeze to catch my connecting flight to Naples because I first have to go through customs. But from the previous posts I've seen on here, looks like flying into Munich for connecting flights should be ok. In any case, I have a fear that if I buy my train ticket in advance there's that slight chance of missing the train (I will purposely buy a train ticket that departs a few hours after my arrival time in Naples to account for any delays and I REALLY need to get some pizza before I leave Naples). Question is, if I miss my pre-purchased train are there other options for me to get to Salerno in a fairly quick amount of time for not much money? Also, because I want to stay in Naples for a couple of hours to get pizza I will need to leave my luggage at the airport or the train station in the meantime. Are there any reputable luggage storage areas at either of these?

Looking at tickets for tomorrow, I see three kinds of trains. The Frecciabianca and Frecciarossa (32-37 minutes) have a base fare (highest fare) of €15. The Intercity (35 minutes, so not slower than the Frecce trains) has a base fare of €8.50. The regional trains take 40 to 51 minutes, and are not showing fares because "The travel solution contains one or more segments that belong to inhibited zones." But regional trains should be even cheaper than the other two types. Since the highest fare on this route is €15 (€20 for first class), I'd just buy a ticket at the station for the next train, rather than buying in advance.

Gabriel,
Whatever you do, when you go through customs MAKE SURE THEY STAMP YOUR PASSPORT! Last summer my wife and I were just waved through customs without getting our passport stamped. We paid dearly for this mistake in Amsterdam when we flew home for not having an entry stamp. We lost valuable time in the airport and had to sit in the "timeout" chair of shame (passport jail) to get matters cleared up. Luckily I kept all of our flight info to prove to the Dutch authorities who we were and the mistake made by the Italians. You shouldn't have any customs in Munich, just recheck though screening. You probably won't need to prepurchase your train ticket. there's always room in 1st class (worth the extra $). Eat a slice for me!

If you are flying from the US through Munich to Naples all on one ticket, you will go through immigration (passport control) in Munich. You will go through customs in Naples, but this is usually a walk through the "Green Channel - Nothing To " door. If you are booked on separate tickets, you will go through both immigration and customs in Munich; your flight from Munich to Naples is treated as a "domestic" flight since both Germany and Italy are Schengen.

Thank you for the responses! I totally didn't think about buying a train ticket on the fast train the day of. I knew I'd probably be able to do the local train(s), but I didn't know if they would take too long. Guess not much of a difference.

Easiest way to the Napoli train station is the Alibus. Located outside the terminal across the street 3 euro 30 min. Left luggage storage is available in the train station.
Several places for Pizza a few blocks from the station. Can't beat the Pizza!!

Well, if you're ending in Salerno, there are some great pizza places, the first one being about a block away from the station off of the main corso, la Tombola....Trianon is closer to the centro storico, and the opposite way, due fratelli is one of my favs :) Campania is the place for pizza :) don't miss those!

My first experience was Da Michele. I have a weak spot for that place now :-)
