Train: MXP to Verona via Milano Centrale and Venice day trips

Don't you think it would be too risky and put us under too much pressure to book our train beforehand from Milano Centrale to Verona?Flight arrives at 1040 at MXP.. Would it be wiser to buy the ticket at Malpensa than to wait and buy at Milano? Those lines at Milano Centrale are really long and if you buy from the machine, those "helpers" are ready to pounce. Anyway , guess I am just looking for validation on this or to be corrected on my thinking... I will book all my other tickets in advance.. Also , at what station would I want to book my Venice arrival?

Also, wondering what are some favorite day trips from Venice for the experienced forum members? I think no more than an hour via train.

Christy, many of us on this website advise not to lock in on a train ticket going somewhere else upon arriving on a plane flight. The plane might be late and there's a good chance that you will miss your train. However, for the Freccibianca train from Milano-Centrale to Verona-Porta Nuova, you can get advance non-refundable tickets for 9Euro. Regular fare is 21.50Euro. No problem waiting until you get to Italy. But, some would consider 9Euro a mild risk of missing their train vs a savings of 12.50Euro. You don't indicate on which date you will be arriving and it will take you about 1.5-2.0hrs to retrieve your luggage, clear immigration and take the train to Milano-Centrale, but I can see 12:35, 13:05 and 14:05 train runs 60 days out that are available for 9Euro. Your choice.

Larry, You do have a point about the 9 Euro ticket.. We will be arriving Oct 19th, a Sunday. I know it is way too early to buy tickets. I just like to have 'my ducks in a row".. I am thinking now that I might just do that.. i would have a wider choice of seats and Hubby can't ride facing backwards.

I don't believe they let you choose your seats... Or at least they did not 2 years ago. The seat assignments are made for you.

Trenitalia now offers the option of selecting your seats or having them assigned. There's a seating chart that pops up if you choose to select your seats.

Padova is about a half hour from Venice. You need an advance reservation if you want to see the frescoes at the Scrovegni chapel.

The train station for Venice is Venezia Santa Lucia.

Thanks, for the responses.. Yes, last year we were able to pick our own seats in advance. At least, on the high speed trains. We bought our regional tickets at the time of travel.
