Train messina to naples

I haven't ridden the train, but the track parallels the road which is boring to no end. Obviously, I also don't know how long the train takes either, but it's a four-hour drive after you get on the mainland side of the strait. The flight can't be but about thirty minutes. I can't picture an airport at Messina - - maybe out of Catania?

I did it last summer. It was hot and loooong. (and we broke it up a bit by staying with my husband's parents a few days on the Calabrian coast. I can't imagine if we had tried to do it all in one swoop.). In addition, the train stock was rundown, no a/c, etc. Fly if you can!!!
