Train Genova to Cinque Terre

Our repositioning cruise terminates in Genova in late September. Will our ship likely be in the vicinity of (or pass by) the dock where the ill-fated Costa ship is being towed for dismantling? It would be interesting to catch a glimpse of this infamous carcass.

But back to the point. I believe I read somewhere that Genova may have more than one train station; is this so? Once off the ship we're heading straight to Cinque Terre by train. We want to go to the correct train station. As we will each have one wheeled-bag (larger than carry-on but not huge) and a back pack; is the station within walking distance (we're seniors but do a lot of walking) or is there a bus or tram between the cruise ship terminal and the train station-- or should we take a taxi? I'm assuming taxis will be plentiful when the ship arrives.

If you go to the trenitalia (trenitalia.com) website you can check train schedules between Genova and the Cinque Terre. This will tell you what train station you leave from. What village on the Cinque Terre are you going to? I just picked a random day and they all, but one, seem to be leaving from Genova Piazza Principe Station. Then you can go to google maps and find the station and determine how far a walk it will be for you. Piazza Principe Station is very close to the waterfront, but it depends where on the waterfront your boat docks.

The Stazioni Marittime is walking distance of Piazza Principe train station. There are frequent direct trains to Monterosso. Other Cinque Terra locations will require a train change somewhere along the way.
The San Giorgio del Porto dry docks are right by the harbor entrance, so there is a good chance the Costa Concordia will be there, but who knows. Wait a few days and maybe someone in Genoa will have spotted it and report back.

The Costa concordia will not be moored in the harbor of Genova, but in Voltri, dry dock number 4 Riparazioni navali, 100%, my brother works there.

Jon,

I believe I read somewhere that Genova may have more than one train station; is this so?

Yes, that's correct. According to Wikipedia, there are 26 stations currently in use in the Genova area. However the two that you'll probably be using are Genova Piazza Principe or Genova Brignole. You may find THIS information or THIS information helpful regarding transportation from the port. I haven't checked, but there will also probably be information in the Mediterranean Cruise Ports Guidebook.

You didn't say which of the five C.T. towns you'd be staying in but as an example, rail trips from Genova Piazza Principe to Monterosso are about 1.5 - 2 hours, often with one change (although there are a few direct runs). You can see all the details on the Trenitalia website. Note that you may be using Regionale trains on that route, so BE SURE to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or you could face hefty fines!

Buon Viaggio!
