This seems doable. My wife and I like trains and have some time. 1-3 nights in each place, fly home from Milan. Bernina Express possibly from Chur to Tirano route. Anyone done this?
Probably nobody had done in a single trip, but it is doable. A few changes of train along the way. Remember that Bellagio is not on a railway line, you must get down at Varenna, walk to the pier and take a ferry.
A ferry could be fun. Or we could stay in Varenna Esino for a night instead, as there is a train station there and still on the lake. OR maybe go direct from Tirano to Milan and spend more time in Vienna/Salzburg.
Or is there another fun town to spend a night on train route from Torino to Milan?
Varenna is a very charming, very small and very popular lakeside town. It would make an excellent stop but make sure you have reservations well in advance. Mennagio is across the lake and on the same midlake ferry as Varenna and Bellagio. If you are only planning on staying one night I think the train + ferry and reverse the operation the next day will probably rob the experience of the much of the tranquil lake charm.
The town of Bellano is one train stop north of Varenna and while it lacks some of the charm it also probably lacks some of the pricing that Varenna has. It doesn't have access to the midlake ferry like Varenna but if you are just stopping overnight you probably don't care about that very much.
Have a great trip,

Thanks, that's a big help :)
