Hello,
Am travelling this summer from Verona (July) to Florence by train with my wife
Booking by train, the only options are Verona to Bologna to Florence. It is a regional train with no option of selecting 1st class, so tickets are 2nd class and we each have a luggage and carry-on ( I know , I know , travelling heavy but ….) my question is has anyone travelled this route by train and would it best to book a early morning time (7:30am) vs Midday to avoid crowds and getting a seat.
Thank you
What is exact date?
Are you looking on official Trenitalia site?
There is construction in July, all trains not available yet
Travelling Thursday July 30th
Trenitalia has only 2 time options that day : 4:30pm and 6:30 pm arriving late evening and basically killing the day
Booking through Italiarail, there are the regional trains but all have 2 or 3 stops
There are direct trains in the morning, eg. at 6:52, 7:53, 8:52 and 9:37, but on Trenitalia they show as "temporarily unavailable". So just wait, and look again in a month or so.
Book on the Trenitalia site, not Italiarail which is a 3rd party vendor. There are a lot more regional train options available. There is construction on the high speed lines in Florence from July 26-30. That's why you aren't seeing freccia availability for your date. You are travelling in high season (busy every day) and will have 2 changes. I'd recommend leaving early.
You should only have one change in Bologna at most, definitely not 2 changes
There are several direct fast trains to Florence from Verona - no changes (Wengen has posted the am journeys)
Direct does not mean “no stops” it means “no changes”
All fast trains require seat reservations so you will get a seat
Station names
Verona Porta Nuova
Firenze SM Novella
Just wait as not all trains for July are listed or purchasable yet due to construction
There are multiple threads discussing this issue
Book on the actual train site not a third party
Trenitalia.com
Don’t worry as they won’t sell out
It would help to know the specific date you plan to travel. I just had a look at the Trenitalia website using an arbitrary date of 7 July and departure time of 10:00, and found lots of departures listed. For example, there's a departure at 10:00 from Verona Porta Nuova to Firenze S.M. Novella, arriving at 12:39 (one 12 minute change in Padova). Both segments are via FrecciaRossa high speed trains. No price is shown at this time so the ticket is not yet available. However it's still a bit early so tickets may be available in a few weeks. I'd suggest checking the schedules periodically, as more departures will open up.
You could also check the Italo Treno website in a few weeks, as that's certainly another option on that route. They only operate high speed trains so no Regionale option will be available.
I'd suggest at least a mid-morning departure as it's likely that your hotel room in Florence may not be serviced yet, so you'll have to deal with your luggage until you can check in (unless the hotel has a luggage storage). Also, it's likely that your hotel in Verona provides a "free" breakfast, so you may as well enjoy that.
IMHO, I wouldn't bother with the extra expense of first class tickets on the high speed trains, as second class is perfectly comfortable.

OP has posted the date above July 30
Christine,
Thanks, I only looked at the original post.
From July 5th to 10th and 26th to 30th there will be building works in Florence, long range trains through Florence will not be possible. There will be shuttle buses connecting partial runs. The definitive schedule has not be announced yet and so long range trains are not on sale now for those dates. It should be possible to travel from Verona to Florence but it is likely the train will not arrive in SMN station but Rifredi and end its run there.
All these things have been discussed in several threads in this area (look for "Ponte al Pino"), people should really have a look to the whole group before posting their questions.
Thank you for the reply. I was not aware to look for topics under ‘Ponte al Pino’ but appreciate you advising
Very helpful now
So , should I wait to book in mid June from Verona to Florence? Also, is booking though Italiarail ok as they provide regional trains options with 2 and 3 changes .i was reading not to book by a :3rd party reseller
This is my first time using a train as I normally rent a car, so apologize for the questions
