My family(of 4)will be driving from paris and the south of france in june and are planning to drop off the rental car in either montecarlo and taking the train from there (or the first town across the border in italy...ventimiglia)on to vernazza. It seems the way to go is just buying the tickets at the train station machines.I've tried to figure out the trenitalia website, and got a ballpark price, but it only listed a train as far as genova...I assume we catch another local train from there? Any info would be appreciated
Have you checked out what it will cost you to drop the car in another country? In Europe there is usually a very high fee to do so. It was around $400 the one time we looked into it. As an alternative, think about dropping the car in the last French town. I think it's Menton. You'll probably get on the same train and save heaps of money.
If you want to travel to Vernazza, look for scheduled trains to La Spezia (the town just south of the Cinque Terre) or Monterosso or Levanto. From Levanto or La Spezia take the local train to the five towns of the CT. Trains from Ventimiglia to Rome would probably stop in La Spezia. You may be able to drop your car in Nice, then take a train ride of less than an hour to Ventimiglia and on from there to the Cinque Terre. Some of the international trains will not require a change in Ventimiglia. If you take a train to Genoa (Genova) there would be regular train service to La Spezia; it takes about an hour or so.
