There are fast direct trains with no changes
Just look on the Trenitalia website
Station names
Venezia Santa Lucia
Roma Termini

Italo also connects those cities. It appears that their trains don’t require a connection either..

There is no rule, but most times there is no transfer.
It depends on the departure hour from Venice, at certain times you may have to transfer at Bologna Centrale. There are more trains going from Milan to Rome than trains from Venice to Rome; since they all call at Bologna station, a transfer allows more options.
Both trenitalia.com and italotreno.it will let you know if and where you have to change.
