train from Venice to Rome

Is it necessary to book a train ride from Venice to Rome in advance (more than a day or two)? We will be in Italy 5/3 - 5/14.

Not necessary, I buy some tickets before I depart the U.S., but often just buy them when I am ready to travel (regionale tickets, always the same price). You can get very good discounts by buying up to 120 days ahead, but these tickets have restrictions regarding changes.

HH,
As previously stated you don't need to purchase them ahead of time but if you are able to choose a designated day, time, train you can order in advance and hopefully score a deal. You just have to live with the restrictions and be sure you are on the exact train listed on your ticket(s).

We checked the Trenitalia site for tickets in late May, found a 2 for 1 deal. We then went to the CaptainTrain ticket selling site and ordered the tickets painlessly.

Enjoy Venice and Rome!!

happy,

No, it's not necessary to buy tickets in advance, but as the others have mentioned you can save money doing that as long as you're willing to commit to a specific train, date and departure time. If you want more flexibility you can easily buy a ticket on the day of travel either at a Kiosk or staffed ticket office, however in that case you'll likely be paying Base fare, which is the highest pricing level.

Note that you can also travel on the competing Italo Treno high speed trains on that route, but in some cases the trains terminate in Rome at different stations. Both networks use Venezia Santa Lucia station on Venice. The www.captaintrain.com website mentioned earlier sells tickets for both rail networks.

Your choice - flexibility or savings.
