Train from Venice to Ravenna

There is an train once a hour from Venice via Bologna (ESAV to Bologna, 16 minute transfer time, then regional train to Ravenna). Price 33.80E.

There is one evening train that goes via Ferrara, both legs are regional trains, the total journey time is the same 3 hours, but the transfer time is 8 minutes. Price 10.40E.

Is there any reason to think that I would miss the connection in Ferrara? With a price difference of 23 euros, I'd rather spend a little more time in Venice and arrive in Ravenna at 9.45 pm.

If you were travelng in Switzerland, an 8-minute connection time would be fine because the trains nearly always run on time. However, regional trains in Italy don't have a sterling reputation for being on time so you might miss your train in Ferrara.

If you want to stay even later in Venice and don't mind gettng to Ravenna quite late, you can take a direct night train. Leave Venezia Santa Lucia at 21:21 and arrive in Ravenna at 00:29. The fare is €17.50.

Don't forget to factor in your lodging in Ravenna. How late can you check in?
