Train from Venice to Lake Como, stop in Milan?

We will be taking the train from Venice to Lake Como in September. We were wondering how easy it would be to stop in Milan and see the Duomo and then continue to Lake Como the same day. Will we have enough time? Is it hard to buy point to point tickets at that time or should we try to buy them ahead of time?

Hi Lisa. This will be easy; good idea. I assume when you say Lake Como, you mean Varenna? The train from Milan to Varenna is a regional, not crowded, just buy tix in Milan when you get off the train from Venice. The tickets are good for any train, so just take whatever time you need in Milan, then train to Varenna. I'm jealous just thinking about it!

Hi Lisa, we did a similar thing back in October but we did Venice straight to Varenna and then stopped in Milan on our way to Florence due to train schedule issues. you can check your timing options here: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ the luggage check in the Milan Train Station was great and then you can hop the subway to the Duomo, roam through the Galleria and take a spin on the Torino without your bags. Also - we bought out tickets all the way through from Venice to Varenna because the Milan to Varenna train is a regional it doesn't require a reservation or a specific train. But it does require a validation stamp =) Cin Cin!

Easy - as the you would have to change trains at Milano Centrale anyway to get the train to Como town (not Varenna). Hop on the tube to the Duomo and then back again - very do-able in a day. You can buy tickets on the day or you can pre-book on trenitalia.com. Try lakecomoproperties.com links pages for other useful travel info and tips.
