Train from Venice to Florence

Hi there. We will be taking a train from Venice to Florence. Getting the suitcases on the train and the available room for them is something we are not familiar with. So first question. Is it difficult to get suitcases on the train and secondly is there room for them ? We are traveling for 9 days so we have a few suitcases.

It may be difficult for someone elderly but they have people that can assist you. The suitcase that does not fit overhead there is space by the door where you get on and off

Do you mean the actual water taxis ( private, expensive) or the vaporetto ( public transport, like a bus but on the water)?

Well I guess both. Not sure about water taxi expense and whether we will go for it or not. I appreciate you responding. Thanks.

How many is "a few suitcases" and how many people are you (that can carry at least one of them)? Any suitcase 24" or smaller will most likely fit in the overhead. Larger ones go into the racks at either end of the car. But I wouldn't count on anyone else to help you. I never rely on the kindness of strangers. You also have to be able to carry them up the 3 -4 narrow steps into the train.

With the vaporetto you are on your own with your luggage- it's basically the city bus. A water taxi- they might assist you.

dnm, Room for luggage is not the problem usually, it is carrying them to the train.
You will have to carry your bags from the street, through the station (which may involve up and down stairs) and onto the platform. Can you all carry/roll all your cases?

It is 3 steps up into the train (click for photo). The usual trick is to put bags on the top step, climb in and pick up the bags.

My recollection is that the Venice station can be handled without having to use steps. But Chris is right about the train itself.

Whatever you do, see if you can manage using a 21" rolling carryon bag. Max. weight is usually 22 lbs., half what a "suitcase" weighs.
Rick Steves has a packing list on this website with a suggest list of what to carry.

If my wife can travel indefinitely with a 21" bag, anyone can.
I just remember my poor father traveling internationally up to about age 80--having to haul my mother's suitcase around.

Thank you thank you for your replies. We are leaving tomorrow and the weather is rain so I’m trying to be efficient and dry. I’m trying to keep it simple and bring one suitcase and an overnight bag for my shoulder. We are going to Florence Stressa and Milan so lots of moving which makes me want even more to keep it compact. Shoes for rainy weather puts a damper on things.
