train from Venice to Bolzano

From Venice would it be best (cheaper) to take a regional train to Verona and then another to Bolzano? "Rome2Rio" gave a train rate of $65 to get from from Venice to Bolzano....that sounds too high!

Jo,

Check trenoitalia.com again for pricing and routing. I believe MOST Venice to Bolzano trains require a change in Verona. There is a Eurocity train, not regional, that does not require a change, the price looks about right with current exchange rate. Of course economy fares will be cheaper but you need to buy those up to 4 months in advance to get the benefit. During the fall of 2013 there were few non-regional trains on this routing.

Good luck,

Hi Jo. The website is Trenitalia.com. If you know your date of travel, go ahead and buy as far in advance as you are able to. Just for fun I entered April 2 as a travel date and the advance fare including frecciabianca (high speed) and EuroCity is only €29.60. By all means take an Altavelocità versus a Regionale.

If you use the trenitalia.com website, try using the "Tutti I Treni" button in the Italian language version of the website. Then you will see all the connections. Use a day within 7 days of today to find the Regional train prices. In your case, there is a "Regionale Veloce" connection at 12:12 that is only 18.20 euro ($25 at today's exchange rate) and takes 3 hour and 18 minutes, about average time for this run even using more expensive high speed trains. The regional trains do not need to be bought in advance.

Jo, almost all runs from Venezia Santa Lucia to Bolzano Bozen will have your change trains at Verona Porta Nuova. (Actually, I don't see any runs that don't). Almost all runs have you taking a Freccia-type fast train from Venice to Verona. The second train is most often a Regionale train. Of the 23 runs I see on a typical day, 20 have this type of combination so it's likely that you will travel in this manner. Note that a very few runs (about 3) have you on a third train from Venezia Santa Lucia to Venezia Mestre to pick up the fast train. Just look carefully at the runs on www.trenitalia.com.

You can buy these tickets up to 119 days out from travel. The lowest fare that you will be able to get for this type of combination run should be 20.65Euro (9Euro for the fast train and 11.65Euro for the Regionale). The 9Euro is a discounted ticket that is non-refundable and cannot be exchanged. Regular base fare is 23Euro for this run. The Regionale train ticket is never discounted. Thus the 11.65Euro.

Interestingly, there is one run showing in March 2014 that has a fast train for both segments. It departs Venice at 11:50. Journey time is 2hrs58min (fastest of the day). Fare for this run could be 18Euro (9Euro for each train).

One slight glitch in working with Trenitalia for tickets for next September. Trenitalia updates their schedule twice a year - mid-June and mid-December. You may not see the runs you want until next May as these runs begin to refresh. My wife traveled to Italy this past September. We couldn't see or buy her tickets until May of this year.
