In mid Sept. we will be traveling by train from Varenna to Vernazza. Any hints, suggestions, or information would be greatly appreciated. We are arriving in Varenna by train from Milan and from what we read, we should get a round trip ticket in Milan, to help with the return.

Yes, it makes sense to buy roundtrip Milan-Varenna tickets when you're first there. They will not be dated for these regional trains, so you do date-punch the ticket that you're using in a box on the wall (or on a post) before entering the track area. Same for the return day. Any station can sell you the Milan-Vernazza tickets, and some portions of that will usually be for a specified date, time, and seat assignment. www.trenitalia.com can give you the schedules, but September schedules won't all be published until late June.
