Train from Trieste to Salzburg/Munich via Venice?

I'm working on our fall adventure, a combo of some land touring and cruising. I tentatively have us booked on a cruise out of Trieste and if we keep it would then have 12 days to get from Trieste to Berlin. We would like to spend time in Salzburg, do the WW2 sites like the Eagle's Nest, Munich, Nuremburg, hit the obligatory tank museum in Munster, go to at least one concentration camp, etc. Is it safe (politically, whatever) to go directly by train from Trieste to Salzburg OR should we go via Venice, which seems more out of the way, to get the scenic route through the Alps? Or is it all through the Alps and scenic no matter which way we go?

I'm reading about the German rail pass but the big picture here, which way is more scenic or safe, is evading me.

The Alps sit between Trieste and Salzburg. I don't know any way to get between them without going over the Alps. Regional train to Udine, Railjet to Villach, IC train to Salzburg. 7 hours, but includes 1 1/2 hour train change in Udine. A little quicker if you go late afternoon, 6 hours with a 22 minute train change in Udine.

Thanks Sam, yes, that's the kind of route Google Maps was suggesting. So is that a wise plan to go directly or is it better (for scenery, for safety, whatever) to go over to Venice and go the longer way? I keep reading about the Brenner Pass and have seen the page on Seat61.

I can't see why it wouldn't be safe to travel from Trieste to Salzburg. The fastest route is as mentioned via Undine and Villach, but avoid Google maps and use more reliable sources insted. And yes the Brenner pass is very scenic, but so are the other routes through the Alps.
