Train from Tirano to Varenna

We are arriving in Tirano on the Bernia Express, then need to travel on to Varenna. How do we go between the two towns? When I look for trains, only buses show up. It appears that others have taken a train. Can someone share a link for the train?

You are arriving on a Swiss train. As I remember, cross the street to the Italian train station.
Safe travels!

What Pat said! The train to Varenna is right by the end of the Bernina Express. I think if you look on Seat 61, he has pictures of it.

Depending on when you will be traveling, you may be seeing a bus because part of the track on that route is under recontruction (through September 10th, I think?) For example, on the Trenitalia website, a trip on July 16 from Tirano to Varenna-Esino shows an Autobus between Tirano and Sondrio, then a Regionale train between Sondrio and Varenna-Esino. The same route on September 16 shows a non-stop Trenord train.

so the key question is - when is your trip?

You can get from Tirano to Varenna on a single train. The operator is Trenord. It is a regional train that leaves every hour (or so). No reservations. https://www.trenord.it/en/routes-and-timetables/

As noted above, you will arrive at the Rhaetische Bahn (Swiss) station. Just walk out the front, cross the town square, and enter the Trenord (Italian) station. The train will say its going to Milano Centrale, but it stops at Varenna.

The route is lovely, down the shores of Lake Como.

For those who don't read Italian, that is a link to a story saying there is a replacement bus service for part of this line from June 11 to September 10. You can still buy the ticket at the Tirano station through to Varenna.

Thank you all so much for your advice. We will be traveling in August, so we will have to do part of the journey by bus. I'm very impressed with the quick responses!!
