We are arriving in Tirano on the Bernina Express on December 30th. We’ve been unable to find/book a train from there to Milan. Any suggestions?
That is a regional train with no reserved seats, so there is no advantage to booking it ahead. It doesn’t show on the schedule for Dec. 30th yet because the new schedule comes out around Dec. 13. There will be trains, and probably similar to the current schedule—-the direct train between Tirano and Milan departs pretty much hourly at 08 minutes past the hour. Look at Monday Dec. 9 to see what the schedule looks like now.
Once in Tirano, cross the plaza from the SBB station to the Italian station. The scenery on the Bernina Express train route is incredible. Actually, you can ride regional trains on this route, same tracks, no reservations required, and have more scheduling options. Enjoy!
Don't bother to book tix in advance (if you even can). There is no price difference and no seat reservation. This is a simple regional train that runs every hour or so. When you get to Tirano, just walk out of the Rhaetische Bahn (Swiss) train station, across the plaza to the Trenord (Italian) station and buy your ticket there.
The train goes direct to Milano Centrale via the beautiful Sondrio Valley and Lago Como.
