train from termini station to fumicino?

We plan on flying out of Rome around 10 am and are wondering where a good place to stay is. All the places I've found near fumicino are much more expensive than our budget will allow. If we spend that night before near the termini station, will it be easy to catch a very early train to the airport? How long will it take? How early do they depart? Any idea on cost? I'm having trouble finding any time tables or other info on this and want to make sure I'm being resonable.

The train you want is the Leonardo Express, departing from Track 24. It runs every half an hour on the :22 and :52. First departure from Termini is at 5:52am. You will reach the airport at 6:23am (31 minute ride). This gives you three and a half hours to get to your flight, which should be doable.

However, I would probably count on staying somewhere within walking distance of Termini as I don't think the metros start running until 6am.

Here is the information on the Leonardo Express:

Another option is to book a hotel in Rome that offers a shuttle service. I caught a 7am shuttle for a 10:30am flight and had plenty of time to spare.

We are in a similar situation. Does anyone know of any hotels walking distance (with luggage) to Termini.

Otherwise Liz - which hotel did you use that had the shuttle?

We flew out of Rome last month at 10am, and we used a company simply called "Rome Airport Shuttle" (http://www.airportshuttle.it). It appears that that they will pick up from ANY hotel or even a private residence. Rick mentioned them in his Italy guidebook, and I saw a street sign in Rome which advertised them.

Their service worked fine, but I'll admit that our driver's agressive driving style scared the hell out of us. At one point on the highway, he tailgated an ambulance that had its sirens blaring, then he actually PASSED the ambulance by using the left shoulder of the road! Rather unbelievable.

Anita, we stayed in the Hotel Alimandi Tunisi, which is up by the Vatican Museum (across the street actually). Very nice hotel but probably a little more than most budget travellers want to spend. They've recently opened a B&B that's a bit cheaper though, and I'm guessing people at the B&B can take advantage of the shuttle as well.

For my next trip in November, we are staying at Hotel Paba which is about a 15 minute walk from Termini station. Rick lists a number of recommended hotels in the Termini/Colosseum area, all of which should be walking distance to the train station.

Other hotels also have shuttle services available, so I would get the names of several places that look good, email them and ask. And as Louis mentioned, there are also shuttle services you can hire. Although it sounds like he got treated to a "special" Roman driving experience!!

Check out www.cross-pollinate.com. They have several listings for B&B's that are reasonably priced and located near Termini. While the area around Termini can be the crustier side of Rome, staying near there will make your mad dash to the airport easier. We took the Leonardo Express on our arrival and departure days and it worked great. Reliable, on time, efficient. And at only 11 euros per person - reasonably priced compared to taxis or shuttles.

Since so many of you helped me out, I am trying to chime in here :) We are staying at this place call the beehive. It is a hostel and a nice one too. Check them out to see if they have available room. We are staying at the double room with shared bath. 80 Euro a night is pretty good to us, and it is about 5 mins walk from Termini.
