I have been looking at train tickets to travel from Siena to Vernazza. My question is, would it be best to buy the tickets before I leave for Italy next week? Or can I purchase the train tickets the day of our departure from Siena? Thanks!

Buy the tickets at any train station in Italy, including can be on the day of travel, and then date-stamp them in the validation box before entering the track area. These Regional train tickets come with extra restrictions (and no advance discount) if purchased online. It's possible to choose a connection that includes a reserved InterCity or faster train , but since those require an extra train change, they're not very attractive. (Don't board a fast train by accident if your ticket is for Regional trains; ticket prices are different.)
