Train from Rome to Venice

A week ago I saw on the Trenitalia site one way tickets for 39, Euro for April 4. Today that same time is going for 78, Euros. Did I miss something? Wrong site? Or am I just too late? I dilly-dallied because I was waiting on an answer from our tour company regarding when we'd arrive at the station. Ugh.

Did you enter '2' as the number of travelers? The price displayed on the right side of the line for each train is the total cost for all travelers ("Nota sui prezzi: l'importo si riferisce al totale dei passeggeri").

I just entered the info for Train #9422 on April 4 (leaves Roma Termini 11:50 and arrives Venezia Santa Lucia 15:35), and it shows 39,00 € for one and 78,00 € for two.

But don't delay -- prices do change as the day of travel approaches!

Jeff beat me to it. You must have entered "1" for the number of passengers to see the €39 price, and "2" passengers to see the €78 price (2 x39).

The €39 price is still available for the 11:50 departure ( train number 9422). But if there are two passengers, make sure you enter that number to see the full range of availability. Most of the other trains that day have a "2 for 1" special, so the price for two is €80. This must be a Saturday special.

Whichever you choose, do not delay further. The special prices do sell out.

That's exactly what I did! Thanks for letting me know!

Alexandra,

I dilly-dallied because I was waiting on an answer from our tour company regarding when we'd arrive at the station. Ugh.

Will you be arriving in Rome on an inbound flight from the U.S.?

It's not recommended to buy train tickets in advance if arriving on inbound flights due to possible flight delays plus delays at the airport due to customs, immigration & baggage claim.

Technically the prices do not charge as the travel day approaches. That is the US airlines approach. There are three levels of fares for Italian trains - super economy, economy, and base. Those prices are fixed and don't change. What does change is the number of tickets available at that price. The number of SE and E tickets available for each trains varies and depends on a number of factors. Unpopular early trains have more and popular mid-day trains, few to none. The SE fares for your routes are already gone so you are looking at the Economy fare. Which could be gone tomorrow.

Thanks again. We will already be in Italy, just finishing up a tour. We decided to extend our stay and travel to Venice. The Trenitalia site is a bit more challenging to navigate than the DB site, which I've used more frequently. But I was able to purchase the tickets so everything seems to be OK.

Someone mentioned that it is not advisable to buy tickets in advance when flying in from the US.
But if you don't, it seems you will most likely get the higher seat fares, unless some of the lower ones still happen to be left.
So, what happens if you buy in advance and then miss the train? Can you use the tickets on a later train, and pay the difference in price? Or are the tickets just useless at that point? Thanks.

Elcan, it would be best to start your own thread.

Whether you can use the ticket pre-purchased depends on the type of ticket: super-economy allows no changes, if you miss the train you are out of luck and must buy a new ticket, probably base (full) fare. If you buy an economy ticket, some changes are permitted, but missing the train is not one of them; you will need to buy a new ticket, probably base fare. If you pre-purchase a base fare ticket (no savings for buying in advance), you can make changes until the train departs, but missing the train will probably mean you need to pay a supplement for a replacement ticket.

I vaguely recall that Base Fare tickets can be exchanged up to an hour after the pre-booked train has left the station. A fee is charged and perhaps worse than that is that you'll have to stand in what could be a LONG queue at the ticket office. There's really no benefit to buying Base fare tickets in advance. Just buy them at the station from a Kiosk either the day before travel or even on the day of travel, as that provides maximum flexibility.

One other point to note is that on the Rome to Venice route, travellers can also use the newer Italo high speed trains, although departure will be from Roma Tiburtina rather than Termini (arrival point in Venice is the same).

Alexandra,

Hopefully the tickets you purchased specify Roma Termini as the departure point, and Venezia Santa Lucia as the arrival point?
