Train from Rome to Sorrento

Am thinking of taking high speed train from Rome to Naples and then either train or boat to Sorrento!
I understand I have to take a different train to Sorrento. Is this at the same station?
How far is the Marina for us to catch a boat, is transportation easy to get to marina and is it worth seeing the coast that way or just stay with the trains.

We will also be returning to Naples to fly to Palermo. Should we tack Naples onto the end before flying out and do our sight seeing then, or day trip from Sorrento?
We hope to stay in Sorrento as a home base.

Thank you,
M

Is this at the same station

It's under the Trenitalia station, just follow the signs saying Circumvesuviana. It takes around 15, maybe 20 minutes to get to the underground tracks,

Whether ferry is a good choice or not can depend on what time of year you're traveling. What month will you be looking to do this trip? Also, whether to do Naples as a day trip from Sorrento, do it as an overnight on the day you arrive from Rome, or at the end of your trip to Palermo depends on how much of Naples you wish to see and how much time you'll be staying in Sorrento.

The Circumvesuviana train station connected to Napoli Centrale - where your high-speed train from Rome will arrive - is Garibaldi. Follow Dario's instructions; you don't have to go outside to walk from one to another.

The marina for boats to Sorrento is a fair distance from the train station, so taking a taxi or bus makes more sense than walking. Also keep in mind that boats run far less frequently than the local train, so the train will most likely get you to Sorrento sooner.

Depending on when your flight departs for Palermo, you may be able to take the Curreri Viaggi bus that goes directly to the Naples airport from Sorrento. If the bus timing does work, you might consider using the boat for a day trip to Naples when you'll have more flexibility and won't have luggage in tow. If the bus timing doesn't work, then going to Naples for a night or two before your flight would be a good plan.

Thank you for your quick reply’s.
Are looking at travelling end of September beginning October 2020.
Looking at tagging on to the Mondo tours as well.

Do you have suggestions for private car from Sorrento back to Naples where I think we will stay for at one night before flying to Palermo.
Thanks

If you want to go direct from Rome to Sorrento, there is another alternative. The private Italo railroad offers a train-bus combination. where you take a high-speed train from Rome to Naples and then transfer to a bus that takes you directly to Sorrento (https://www.italotreno.it/en/destinations-timetable/italobus). You make the transfer at Naples' new suburban rail station, Naples Afragola, which was built for high-speed rail.

Hi, thank you. Does this bus travel along the coast? From what I have read it might be a nerve racking ride!
Thanks
M

There is also the Marozzi bus that travels directly from the Tiburtina bus station in Rome to Corso Italia in Sorrento. It takes about four hours, with one bathroom stop enroute. We've done this twice and it's worked out fine. Personally, I think it's easier than the train since you don't need to make any changes. Depending on the time of year, there is either one bus or two buses scheduled daily. The bus travels mostly inland so it's not a scary ride. mommarina, you are confusing "coastal" busses from Sorrento to Positano or Amalfi with busses between Naples and Sorrento. The highway Naples to Sorrento is busy, controlled access, and has very limited views, in a few towns. It isn't scenic, and it isn't vertiginious. It is subject to traffic and construction delays, of course. Unlike the single, two-lane road to Positano, it doesn't have curves that some tour busses have to make two tries to get around, backing up traffic each time.

In that sense, it's good to reiterate that Sorrento is not, technically, on the Amalfi Coast. It's on the Gulf of Naples. And it also has nice views, if your hotel (or edge of town walk) is near the cliff above the Gulf.

The hour of your flight to Palermo should help you decide the question in your second OP paragraph.

For daytripping purposes, and getting in and out of the area, Sorrento is usually the best home base. We used our hotel's recommended land partner for local car service.

Train from Roma to Napoli Centrale, then one of the trains downstairs from Garibaldi:

https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule

https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/campania-express-train-schedule [less uncomfortable and less frequent]

Driver with Sorrentocars or other to the Sorento hotel about €80. Note that Sorrento taxi rates are high.

Flights from NAP to PMO on Easyjet or Volotea. See skyscanner.com. Note schedules vary day by day.
