Train from Rome to Sorrento and then from Sorrento to Puglia (different days)

Hello,
My friend and I are planning our first trip to Italy next September. We have looked online to see which train(s) we would need to take to get from Rome to Sorrento, but have been unsuccessful. Would someone please be able to assist us with this information? Also, we need to know what train to take from Sorrento to Puglia as this will be our next destination.

We look forward in hearing from someone that has taken these routes lately.

Many thanks.

The national railway system runs from Rome to Napoli Centrale station (at least hourly during most of the day, fastest trains take one hour). See train schedules through DB or www.trenitalia.com. The local commuter line runs from the lower level of that station to Sorrento, see those chapters of Rick's Italy book, or http://www.vesuviana.it/. Getting to your destination town in Puglia, you'll again connect at Naples.

Where in Puglia? It's a large region.

The best way to get to Puglia by train from Sorrento is to return to Napoli Centrale on the Circumvesuviana and then take a local train to Caserta to connect with a high-speed or Intercity train to Bari. The high-speed trains from Rome to Bari bypass Naples, so you’ll need to catch it in Caserta. I did the Sorrento to Bari trip a few years ago and it worked great. To get from Bari to Alberobello, you would then change to FSE, a local train company. There are numerous departures throughout the day, with the last train departing for Alberobello at 20:36. You can check schedules at www.fseonline.it. Not sure whether Bari Centrale, where the high-speed and Intercity trains arrive, and Bari Centro, where the FSE trains depart, are the same station. If not, I suspect they’re close to one another. Maybe someone else will know.

Keep in mind that the train trip from Sorrento to Alberobello is a long one and that there’s usually a big gap in the Caserta to Bari schedule midday, so plan to travel either early or in the afternoon. I chose to spend the morning in Sorrento and travel in the afternoon, but the morning options are faster if you don’t mind getting an early start.

Hi Andrew,
Can we catch a plane from Naples to Alberobello?
Thank you.

Hi Maggie,

Circumvesuvian: Sorrento to Napoli Garibaldi ( lower level of Napoli central) leaves 6:25 arrives 7:47 1H27m 4,40 euro.

Trenitalia: Napoli Centrale-Bari Central leaves 8:17 arrives 12:08 3H51m cost as low as 29 E prepurchased.

http://www.fseonline.it/SearchResults.aspx?SearchResult=8680528&type=f&best=true.

Bari Centro-Alberobello leaves 13:35 arrives 15:15 1H40m 4,80 euro.

Actual travel time around 7 hrs.

You "could" fly to Bari, but it won't save any time and will cost around $300

Thank you Gerri! What a long commute, but I believe it will be worth it.

As far as I remember the last two tracks at Bari Centrale are the tracks FSE trains are leaving from. As the trains depart, they turn right on a level crossing and enter the dedicated FSE Bari Sud Est station. But services mostly start from Bari Centrale. FSE trains are all commuter runs stopping at all stations, so are quite slow.
