We have a group of 5 adults taking day trip from Rome to Pompeii this September. Plan on taking earliest train available from Rome but not sure if we should list Pompei or Pompei Scavi as our final destination? Pompei options are more time conducive to our schedule but not sure distance from ruins with that station. Purchasing via Trenitalia website. Thanks.
Take a fast train Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale
Then Circumvesuviana (local commuter train) to Pompeii Scavi
This question comes up frequently -a forum search will give you all the details
Thanks. I was a little confused as all the morning options have the Naples stop with switch then a stop in Pompeii and what looks like a bus transfer to get to ruins. Is that typical?
Some additional info from the helpful Man In Seat 61:

My only change to his advice would be to purchase your fast-train tickets from Rome to Naples from Trenitalia or Italo versus italiarail.

If you take the train from Rome to Pompei, it takes you to the centre of town and then a 10 minute walk ( or you can hop a bus) to Pompeii archeological park. Or you take the train to Naples Centrale station and then catch the Circumvesuviana train downstairs to Pompeii Scavi station which is across the street from the main entrance to the site. You won't book tickets in advance for the Circumvesuviana train, it's the local city line that runs between Naples and Sorrento. Cost is about €4 and runs about every half hour.
It is confusing. Pompeii with two letter “i’s” refers to the Archaeological Park. Pompei with one “i” refers to the modern town a couple miles from the archaeological site.
Pompeii Scavi is the station to disembark at.
