Hi all, We will be staying right by the San Pietro train stop near the Vatican in Rome and want to take a long day trip to Orvieto. Where should I go to buy the train tickets, and should I buy them days before or morning of? Can I get to Orvieto from the San pietro station? Also, does anyone know how early the train leaves from Rome, and how late from Orvieto back to Rome? We want to make this as full a day possible.
Thanks!
Amanda, AFAIK you'll have to use Roma Termini for the trip to Orvieto. You can buy your tickets at the station, either from the staffed ticket booths or the automated Kiosks (a credit card was required when I bought tickets there on my trip last year). For that particular route, I'd probably just purchase tickets the day of travel (don't forget to validate!), although if you purchase before midnight on the previous day you may be able to get the Mini fare (depending on which class of train you choose - check the Trenitalia website for details). There are numerous departures on that route every day, so you'll have lots of choice on times. You could (for example) depart Rome about 7:00 and leave Orvieto about 20:00. The last train of the day departs for Rome at 23:27. Again, check the website for specific times (re-check just prior to your trip, in case the schedules change). Happy travels!
You can get to Orvieto from San Pietro station, but the trip will require a change at Roma Termini. Might be just as easy to take the Metro to Termini and catch the train from there. Ask your hotel for their recommendation. They can also advise on best place and time to buy your tickets. You can check schedules at www.trenitalia.com using Roma San Pietro and Orvieto as your departure/arrival destinations. Use a date within 60 days to see prices. Currently, the earliest train departs San Pietro at 7:40 (8:22 from Termini) and arrives in Orvieto around 9:30am, and the last return train departs at 9:41pm and arrives at San Pietro close to midnight.
The train from Roma S. Pietro to Orvieto will take about 2hrs. It does go the Rome Termini where you will need to change trains. This train makes 3 stops at other stations in Rome before arriving at Termini. Thus, the longer journey time. The train from Rome Termini to Orvieto takes 1hr20min. Best to take the Metro to Termini. The first train departs Rome Termini for Orvieto at 05:58. The last train departs Orvieto for Rome Termini at 23.27. You can see the same thing I'm seeing at www.trenitalia.com
