Hello Everybody,
Having a bit of a hard time figuring these train schedules and stations out. From Rome Termini (I am assuming this is the main train station) when I plug into Trenitalia to go to Naples, it gives me the schedule for Napoli Tutte La Stazione. Ok. Then I go to the Circumvusiana site and it doesn't have this train station listed out of about 7 or 8 that it gives. Can anyone help me on what train stations I should be selecting?
Thanks,
Lisa
Did that trip in reverse last October-Sorrento to Rome. Circumvesuviana is not part of the Trenitalia system as is the train from Rome to Naples. Check out Trip Advisor. I obtained much of my information about this trip on that site. If I remember any other details will send them along.
Apologies if you know that "Napoli Tutte La Stazione" means all Naples stations.
From Rome you will arrive in Napoli Centrale (C.LE) station, you then go downstairs to Naples Garibaldi station, which is below Centrale station, for the train to Sorrento.
As Linda has noted, there are two train stations in one location in Naples. The upper level of the main Naples train station is Napoli Centrale. The Trenitalia train system operates from this station. The lower level is known as the Napoli Garabaldi station. The private Circumvesuviana train system operates from this station. It's a short walk between the two stations.
On www.vesuviana.com, you want the Napoli Garabaldi station. For Pompei, you want the Pompei-Scavi stop. For Sorrento, it's Sorrento.
Thanks for the advice everyone, muchos appreciated!
Lisa, as a general rule, the Circumvesuviana runs every 30 minutes. If you miss one, just wait for the next. Schedule the Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale and the Circum. part will take care of itself. (assuming you go during daylight hours.)
I am now thinking that perhaps I will take the bus straight from Rome to Sorrento. Then I don't have to worry about transferring in Naples, and as well, I haven't been reading that many great things about the circum train. Apaprently famous for pickpockets etc. Just easier to sit back and relax and go from A to B? A bit cheaper too?
Anyone have any thoughts?
Lisa, I took the train from Rome Termini to Naples, and the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. I bought my tickets in the train station. There are frequent trains/connections and and I experienced no major problems -- plus it was really quite reasonable. I guess the bus is an alternative, but I think taking the train is really quite easy. The train station in Sorrento is the last stop on the line, and it's just a short walk into the center.
Be sure you get out at the correct stop in Naples. We were following another couple who thought they knew where they were going and got out at the first stop in Naples where no one spoke english. You need to go two more stops. Not good. Luckily a guardian angel by the way of a darling italian girl, that was also going to Sorrento came to the rescue and guided us the rest of the way. I wouldn't recommend going that way but it was a wonderful adventure, after the fact.
We made the same connection and it was easy. Once in Naples C.Le., follow the signs to the Circumvusiana tracks downstairs and buy a ticket from the counter to Sorrento. We took that train on multiple occasions and didn't notice pickpockets. Just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine.
