Train from Rome to Naples in May 2025

We will be traveling to Italy in May 2025. We plan to travel by train from Rome to Naples en route to the Amalfi Coast. We plan to take a transfer from Naples to Sorrento. Trains pretty much leave every hour. How far in advance should I buy train tickets to ensure availability? Thank you.

Unless you are leaving from the airport on arrival (in which case I would wait in case flight is delayed), you can buy the tickets as soon as they are available.

If your final destination is a town on the Amalfi Coast, the best routing is to take the train from Rome to Salerno and and then take the bus or ferry to the town to which you are going. Much easier and faster than Naples>Sorrento>AC.

I’ve taken the risk of buying Super Economy tickets in the past and fortunately have not experienced delays by the airlines or immigration at FCO.

Thank you for your quick response to my question. We will be using Sorrento as our home base while in AC.

Just to clarify. Upon arrival, we will be spending the night in the Pantheon neighborhood in Rome. After a little rest and a good meal, we will travel to Naples in the afternoon the next day on the fast train. Since timing should not be an issue, , do you suggest buying those tickets in advance. Thank you.

Yes, since you know when you will be traveling and have no need of flexibility, then why not save a few bucks (provided you are buying the high speed ticket--slow regional trains have no advance discount, but to Naples you would get a discount)

On both Trenitalia and Italotreno you can in fact buy a ticket for Rome - Sorrento. Italo will in that case sell you a combination train+coach ticket. Probably a better option than using the Circumvesuviano,.

You do not need to worry much about availability. Between Trenitalia and Italo there are something like 80 trains daily on that route. But buying in advance does give you nice discounts...

Last week I was able to buy my Italo tickets for May! I've never seen them available this far in advance. Got some great deals.

Note that many advance purchase discounts on Frecciarossa tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable.

BTW, technically Sorrenti is on the Gulf of Naples, not the Amalfi Coast. That affected initial replies to your question.

You may want to look into the non-Trenitalia commuter train to Sorrento, the Circumvesuviana, no reservations, open seating, as in first -come first-seated. Some of us find it gritty, hot, and jammed. It is cheap and frequent, and stops at Pompeii Scavi. Trenitalia does NOT go to Sorrento with a train operated by them, but I have no experience with their (previous post) BUS connection. That might be attractive if well-synchronized with the train to Naples.

Trenitalia sells both a HST + Bus and HST + Local train ticket. Italo on HST + Bus.
